ocr: The Earth's magnetism The Earth is like a giant magnet with its own magnetic field. This is caused by the iron core at the center of the Earth. EARTHS MAGNETIC FIELD COMPASS POINTING NORTH Although the magnetic forces produced by the Earth are too weak to attract magnetic materials, they are strong enough to affect the poles of other magnets. A pivoted magnet, such as a compass, will line up in a north- south direction because of the Earth's magnetic field. However, the compass will point to the Earth's magnetic north, which is not quite the same as the geographical north.
